How it works
BMI (Body Mass Index) is an international measure used to screen whether an adult's weight is appropriate for their height. It's a useful first indicator, not a substitute for medical evaluation.
Formula:
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m)
WHO classification:
- < 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal
- 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight
- 30.0 to 34.9 — Obesity class I
- 35.0 to 39.9 — Obesity class II
- ≥ 40 — Obesity class III
Practical examples
70 kg and 1.75 m
BMI = 70 / (1.75)² = 22.86 → Normal.
90 kg and 1.70 m
BMI = 90 / (1.70)² = 31.14 → Obesity class I.
55 kg and 1.65 m
BMI = 55 / (1.65)² = 20.20 → Normal.
Frequently asked questions
Does BMI apply to everyone?
For healthy adults it's a good first screen. Not reliable for athletes with high muscle mass, pregnant people, the elderly or children.
Does a high BMI mean I'm unhealthy?
Not necessarily. Body composition, fat distribution and clinical exams define real health risk.
BMI vs body fat %?
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Body fat percentage measures adipose tissue directly.
