How it works
"How many pizzas should I order?" is the question that comes up at every birthday, work meeting, family dinner, and kids' party. This calculator solves it from three variables: number of people, slices per pizza (usually 8), and hunger level (light, normal, very hungry). The result already rounds up — having extra pizza beats running out.
Rule of thumb:
Slices per person: • Light (snack/kid): 2 slices • Normal (lunch/dinner): 3 slices • Very hungry (teens, men): 4 slices Pizzas = ⌈(People × Slices/person) ÷ Slices/pizza⌉
Standard pizza sizes (US): small (8 slices, 10"), medium (8 slices, 12"), large (8 slices, 14"), extra-large (12 slices, 16-18"). The cheapest per-slice option is usually the large 14" — best price-per-slice ratio. At all-you-can-eat buffets, average consumption is 5-7 slices per adult plus drinks. For kids' parties (up to age 10), count 1.5-2 slices per child and 3 per accompanying adult.
Things that change the math: other dishes (appetizers, salad, dessert) cut pizza intake by 30–50%; lunch eaters consume more than late dinner ones; alcohol increases appetite; and the universal "we need pepperoni" rule, since the most popular topping always runs out first. Diversify toppings: 1 pizza per 4-5 people on different flavors covers most groups well.
Practical examples
Birthday party — 10 adults, normal hunger
10 × 3 = 30 slices · 4 large pizzas (8 slices each)
Kids party — 12 kids + 8 adults, light/normal hunger
12 × 2 + 8 × 3 = 48 slices · 6 large pizzas
Office lunch — 6 people, normal hunger
6 × 3 = 18 slices · 3 large pizzas
Game night — 15 friends with beer, very hungry
15 × 4 = 60 slices · 8 large pizzas
Frequently asked questions
How many slices in a large pizza?
Standard US large pizza (14") has 8 slices. Extra-large (16-18") has 12. Check before ordering — some shops cut differently.
Should I order pizzas in advance?
For parties of 15+, yes — 1-2 days ahead secures your time slot. For regular delivery, 60-90 min before the meal works. On Friday and Saturday nights, build in extra buffer.
How many toppings should I order?
Rule of thumb: one different topping per 4-5 people. For 20 people, 4-5 different toppings. Always mix classics (cheese, pepperoni) with one sweet option (dessert pizza) to close the meal.
How do I avoid waste?
Classic toppings (pepperoni, cheese, sausage) get eaten first. Specialty toppings (gourmet, seafood) tend to leftover. Order 60% classic and 40% specialty. Have takeaway boxes ready — cold pizza next morning is a national treasure.
